Give career training to 100 deaf students in India

The second floor of our school building is finally complete! Over 100 people attended the inauguration ceremony held on 29^th April, 2017. The construction of the school building which started almost 3 years ago could not be continued at a rapid pace due to lack of funds. It was hard to convince people on why it was necessary to complete the building. Then we decided to start classes at the partially complete building to see if it would generate enough interest among deaf students to attend the classes. Since classes commenced, number of students started increasing showing that there was indeed a demand for this type of program and hence it was important to keep continuing the construction. Currently we can accommodate only 15 students. With the second floor being complete, we should be able to accommodate more students in the future. Rotary Club of Calcutta financed the construction and we are grateful to them for this contribution.

Teachers from “Missionaries of Deaf Opportunity Outreach” in Tamil Nadu, India (DOOR-INDIA), deaf themselves, are teaching the students sign language and English language for an hour every week free of charge. Our regular paid teacher is also taking classes for 2-3 hours for 2 days every week. In addition to basic computer courses students are being taught to prepare resumes, search for jobs, apply online, and use the internet for daily activities.

My deepest thanks to our donors for believing in our cause. Their contribution pays the salary of the current teacher, the school caretaker, the sweeper, utility and internet bills, and monthly material fees for the students. Our school is free of cost and doesn’t charge any money from the students, hence these contributions are vital to keep it running.
