Making Strides Every Day

Dear Friends,

We have some exciting news to share with you in this report. December of last year we had been approached by “Missionaries of Deaf Opportunity Outreach” in Tamil Nadu, India (DOOR-INDIA) for permission to start advising and teaching deaf students at our school. They have started a side by side program in our school where two of their teachers, deaf themselves, teach the deaf students sign language and English language for an hour every week free of cost. These teachers have come far from their homes with the goal to train and mobilize the students to become leaders in the community, workplace and home. We are very grateful to them for doing this for our students.

One of our close friend and great supporter has written an article on the life story of my father, the club's vice-president who manages the daily activities of the school along with other deaf members. Please read through the attached article “Sunshine’16” (Page 11) to know what motivation keeps him going and working for the school every day.

We are also excited to see the level of support increasing. We have 3 monthly recurring donors now who believe in our cause. Their contribution pays the salary of the current teacher, the school caretaker, the sweeper, utility bills, and monthly material fees for the students. Our school is free of cost and doesn’t charge any money from the students, hence these contributions are vital to keep it running. My heartfelt thanks to them.

Classes are being held as usual for 2-3 hours for two days of the week. The students are getting hands-on training on how to set up a workstation from scratch, getting connected to the internet both wirelessly and through cable, managing network connections, Photoshop editing, writing documents in MS word and filling out applications online. An examination will be conducted in March to determine their progress.

If you plan to be in Kolkata and want to visit our school, please let us know in advance and the school members will be more than happy to welcome you. Thank you all again for your support.

With gratitude,

Bulbul Ganguly
