The Virginia Living Museum is a leader in LIVING exhibits. It provides a home for 1,000 native animals representing 180 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish, including threatened and endangered species. Many animals have been rehabilitated and deemed un-releasable by veterinary professionals. Fully accredited, the Museum provides the animals a safe environment and enriching, natural habitats while they serve as ambassadors of their species - delighting & educating guests.
On average, caring for more than 1,000 wild animals by providing healthy diets, indoor & outdoor natural habitats, top-notch medical care, and enriching programs that ensure a high quality of life costs $1,600 daily. The best support for animals in human care requires physical and mental enrichment very similar to the wild experience. Items to stimulate natural experiences, specialized medications and food, as well as preventative veterinary care are not covered by general admission revenue.
Donor contributions are vital to ensuring a high quality of life for every animal, supporting the cost of food, habitats, medical care, and enrichment, as well as environmental education & conservation lessons for humans at the museum. Supporting enrichment plays a critical role for all animals - from bobcats to otters to horseshoe crabs! Gifts enable animal care professionals to create novel items & activities to engage and stimulate animals based on their species, age, & unique medical needs.
The Museum protects exhibit & ambassador animals by providing a safe and enriching home for the duration of their lives. In turn, the animals serve as educational ambassadors, teaching the museum's 280,000 guests each year about native Virginia species and the role they play in the broader ecosystem. The museum serves as a beloved educational resource for families & schoolchildren to experience nature, get inspired to protect wildlife, engage in conservation action and discover science careers.
