With over 1,000 animals in the Virginia Living Museum‘s care, the health and wellbeing of all exhibit and ambassador animals is paramount. Accredited by the American Zoological Association, the Museum rises to the challenge of meeting the most up-to-date standards of animal welfare, year after year.
Edgar, the Museum’s new raccoon, went on exhibit in 2023. We continue to acquire new animals in alignment with our Institutional Collection Plan, featuring species native to Virginia.
Private funds support animal diets, veterinary care, habitat development and maintenance, and enrichment items: hammocks for the otters, dig boxes for lizards, rubber balls for the deer, chews for the red wolves and coyotes, tug rope for the alligator, exercise pens for snakes, woven mats that are more comfortable for aging animals with joint issues, and a myriad of items to encourage the animals to actively forage for food.
Thanks to additional enrichment, keepers and volunteers are observing more energetic and active behaviors while the animals are on exhibit and during education programs.
This past year, curators and animal keeper improved animal habitats by adding greater environmental complexity -- new climbing structures, pools for swimming, and areas of privacy to provide a greater sense of safety and comfort. Our donors' financial support helped make this possible! Your generosity sustains us, strengthens us, and advances our education & conservation mission into the future.
We are profoundly grateful. Thank you!
