The Buds N Colors camp for HIV positive children was organised at Salem on 11 to 13th of May 2018. About 13 children between the age group of 9 and 13 years were present in the camp. Most of the children were either semi-orphan (living with one parent) or complete orphans. In this group, there were representations of tribal positive children too.
The camp was to help the children come together as a group for the first time (as most of them come from poor circumstances and do not have opportunities of learning about their health and develop life skills) and build support systems among them.
The programmes included, songs, dance, story- telling, skill based session (hand writing), Health education, craft time and movie time. The health based sessions included Personal Hygiene , nutrition, Good touch and Bad touch and also on their emotional well being. The last day of the camp was an outing trip to Yercuad (hill station) near Salem. Boating was almost first time experience for most of the children in the camp.
“I was very scared on the first day to come to the camp, as I have not been part of any group. But now after the camp, I feel bad I am going to leave the team members and my friends” - Semi-orphan boy after the camp.
“I have always felt alone, but now after attending the camp, I feel so good because I have lot of friends here in this group” - Orphan girl 10 year old living with HIV
“I was very happy to be in the camp, because I learnt lot of songs and crafts. This is the first time, I also went for boating and it will always be in my sweet memories” - expressed a 9 year old tribal child living with HIV
