CPF Project Progress Report #2

By Becca Iverson | Developmenet Coordinator

Examining roots in my school garden!
Examining roots in my school garden!

Once again, we would like to thank our dedicated supporters who helped us reach our funding goal for CPF's first-ever Global Giving project, “Invest in Outdoor Learning Gardens & Health."

As you know, funds raised through this project will support the installation of the CPF Learning Gardens Program* at West Manor Elementary and Beecher Hills Elementary, both Title 1 schools in the Atlanta Public School System (APS).

* (In case you didn’t know before now- CPF Learning Gardens include: Installation of 5 raised bed
growing spaces and 1 pollinator habitat, standards-based lessons (grades K-5) to be taught in the garden, all supplies needed to teach lessons, 2-day teacher training workshop, mobile cooking cart, summer garden maintenance program, and volunteer installation day.)

In early August, we reported that we were in a multi-month process of drafting and signing a formal MOU with the Atlanta Public School District that would name CPF as the official ‘Garden Partner’ for the district - way cool right?!  But until this formal contract was approved and signed, we are unable to begin garden installations on school properties. The MOU language was finalized in late August and CPF will begin installations for West Manor and Beecher Hills gardens in late November 2013.

As you now know (if you hadn’t already), this program comes with much more than just a garden installation! That said, we have been making progress in other aspects of the Program as it relates to Beecher Hills and West Manor. The mobile cooking carts and curriculum bins are in our possession and ready to be delivered to the schools (post garden installation). The Teacher Training Workshop for Beecher Hills and West Manor teachers is currently being planned for February of 2014. Finally, beginning at the end of December, CPF will work with Truly Living Well (Urban Gardening Association) and the Atlanta Community Food Bank to begin the interview process for securing interns to manage the Summer Garden Maintenance Program at these 2 schools.

Please stay tuned for our next progress report where you will see photos of the garden installations and deliveries of the mobile cooking carts and curriculum bins to the schools!

From the entire Captain Planet Foundation team, we thank you again for your dedication to our cause and we look forward to reporting new updates in the New Year!
