How do we thank you for a resource this precious

By Belinda Abraham | Communications, Resource Development Manager

Borehole digging underway

We can't thank you enough, since our last report to you, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA has achieved partial water self-sustainability.

Because you cared enough, to send funds our way, we have been able to:

  • Purchase Jerry Cans to transport donated water
  • Install a rainwater harvesting system in our water heavy areas
  • Rescue many animals that had become stuck in shrinking riverbeds
  • Provide fresh water to all our animals and maintain our hygiene standards
  • Drill our very own borehole

We can't even start to thank you or explain to you what your contributions have meant to us! The rains have started to fall and our rainwater harvesting system is working well, providing us with water for cleaning and reducing the load on the council water system.  Our water tariffs are also so high, as the cost to supply water has increased so drastically.  The water that we now have at our disposal has reduced our average monthly water cost by more than R20 000.00 - that's a great saving!  This means we can direct those funds towards other drought related costs - including the price of horse feed which the drought has sent soaring.

The drought is not yet over although we have had some wonderful rainfall and we still hope that we will still be able to install a water purification system which will make our borehole water (naturally high in iron) completely safe to drink and connect this to our water system which will futher reduce our use of council water.  We also hope to still be able to install a rainwater harvesting system in all our other departments so that we can enjoy the cost saving that this will present us with (while the rains are falling).

Our most urgent needs have been met and the relief is huge!  We lived in fear of standing helplessly by while animals died in their thousands, just days after day zero and we are so grateful that we turned to you and found you there, ready to help.

We can't thank you enough, thank you for walking beside us, for supporting us and for your generosity. We could never have achieved all we have without you.

Yours for the love of animals

Belinda
