My story with FACES began in 2012, my second semester of my freshman year at Live Oak High School. It had been the first time in many years for Live Oak to attend Camp Everytown; I and the other campers were a little apprehensive since we were the first to experience it and had no idea what to expect. But who knew taking that leap of faith and going to a camp that we knew little about, would change my perspective in life forever.
Camp Everytown is a life changing experience, and to be able to grow as a person amongst my peers is something I will remember for the rest of my life. Participating in the different activities that FACES puts on makes us become more aware of what our actions and others actions can do- whether positive or negative. Camp is a safe place, a place where we can be ourselves and not have to worry about somebody judging us or being rude. We all are able to get to know and respect each other and we also know that anyone around is going to call out "Two Ups"!
Being able to freely talk about the adverse effects of racism, sexism, bullying, and how to fix the problems that we face in high school (and in the world) is an opportunity given to us at Camp that we aren't given at school; it is truly an eye opener, especially when it comes time to share personal stories.
Camp is the longest, yet shortest 3 or 4 days of life, or so it seems, but when it comes time to leave, no one wants to. Which is great but us, as campers, we can make a bigger impact by sharing what we learned to others who were not able to experience such a program.
I personally loved Camp so much that I came back my sophomore year as a CIT to relive the experience and further grow as a person. To my expectations it was just as, if not more amazing, than my first time. Unfortunately, I was not able to attend my junior year and senior year because Live Oak was not able to attend at all. However, the summer before my senior year was my first time being a Crew Member at Camp Common Ground for Britton Middle School.
Common Ground is a whole other experience compared to Camp Everytown, even though they are similar. Being able to mentor incoming 7th Graders is so much fun and seeing the transformation from Day 1 to Day 3 is indescribable. Last year, which was my first year participating in Common Ground, I had ten 7th Graders, in which I still talk to some of them here and there, and two of my girls became best friends (Crystal and Savannah). Crystal actually returned as a helper the next year, and I was so happy to see her and to know that she still implements what she had learned at Common Ground. Crystal and Savannah are still the best of friends!
This year's Common Ground was no different, and wielded the same atmosphere as the year before, due to the majority of the Ground Crew coming back for a second or third year- which was amazing! I cannot thank the Ground Crew team enough because without them not much would be accomplished. And without being introduced to FACES I wouldn't be the person I am today and for that I am forever grateful. "Alone we go faster, but together we go farther", is a quote that was stated at my second Camp Everytown, and something that I will always remember.
Currently, Elizabeth is at the University of Kent in Canterbury, England for her first semester.
Keep inspiring us, Elizabeth!
