Project Report | Jun 30, 2026
Books Beneath the Desert Sky

By Amna Hassan Kazmi | CEO

"Every time our camel arrives, the village gathers, not because something is being delivered, but because hope has arrived on four gentle feet."

Across the deserts and remote landscapes of Pakistan, where schools and libraries are often many miles away, our Camel Libraries continue to transform ordinary days into extraordinary moments of learning.

During March, April, and May 2026, eight Camel Libraries; Nayab, Amal, Sukoon, Khushi, Mashal, Roshan, Raunaq, and Afzaal, journeyed through underserved communities in Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan, bringing books, stories, creativity, and joy to children who otherwise have little access to reading materials.

For many children, these visits are the highlight of the month. They wait eagerly for the familiar sound of camel bells, knowing that every visit opens the door to new adventures, imagination, and learning.

This Quarter at a Glance

Over the three-month period, our Camel Libraries reached more than 8,100 children through regular reading sessions, storytelling, book borrowing, creative activities, and community engagement.

Our mobile libraries continue to prove that geography should never determine a child's opportunity to learn.

More Than Books

The Camel Library is far more than a travelling collection of books.

Each visit creates a safe, welcoming learning space where children:

  • Discover the joy of reading.

  • Build confidence through storytelling and discussion.

  • Express themselves through drawing and creative activities.

  • Learn about kindness, empathy, culture, and the environment.

  • Develop friendships while reading together.

Parents and community elders increasingly view the Camel Library as an important educational resource and actively encourage children to participate.

Children's Stories

Every child who joins our library carries a unique story.

Rubina (10) has become one of Mashal Camel Library's most enthusiastic readers. She eagerly borrows folk tales to read at home and often returns excited to discuss her favourite characters.

Adan (10) comes from a low-income family where books were once a luxury. Today, he confidently participates in storytelling sessions and has developed remarkable reading skills.

Rozina (10) counts down the days until every Camel Library visit. Each new book introduces her to places and people she never imagined.

Abdullah (12) has become a storyteller himself, sharing the stories he reads with his younger siblings and neighbourhood friends, multiplying the impact of every book.

Hira (12) encourages other girls in her village to attend library sessions, helping create a growing community of young readers.

Minahil (11) has inspired her entire family through her love of books. Her parents now actively support her reading and encourage her younger siblings to participate.

Challenges Along the Journey

Reaching isolated communities is never easy.

This quarter, our teams navigated intense heat, long distances, difficult terrain, and limited infrastructure to ensure children continued receiving regular library visits.

Like many nonprofit organizations, we also face rising operational costs. Expanding book collections, maintaining camels, supporting librarians, and reaching additional villages all require sustained funding. Yet despite these challenges, our commitment to every child remains unchanged.

Looking Ahead

In the coming months, we hope to:

  • Expand our collection of children's books.

  • Introduce additional arts, crafts, and creative learning activities.

  • Organize village reading festivals and storytelling celebrations.

  • Strengthen volunteer and parent participation.

  • Reach even more children living in educationally underserved communities.

With continued support from our GlobalGiving community, each Camel Library can travel farther, carry more books, and inspire many more young readers.

Thank You

To everyone who has donated, shared our story, or believed in this unique idea, thank you.

Because of your generosity, books continue to cross deserts, stories continue to travel where roads often do not, and children continue to discover that their dreams are just as limitless as the horizon before them.

Every donation helps ensure that another camel sets out carrying not only books, but hope, opportunity, and the promise of a brighter future.

Together, we are proving that even in the most remote corners of the world, stories have the power to change lives.
