Help Give Cambodian Young Adults Independence

Since Cambodia is a country blighted with poor sanitation and poverty, health education is so
so valuable.  

Right now as we receive reports from Cambodia about severe outbreaks of Dengue Fever across the country we take great comfort in the fact the Young Adults in our programmes not only get extra education which covers
fundamental health issues but also that so many of them are seeking careers in the health sector to help their fellow countrymen.  We currently have two Young adults training to be nurses, with one heading to Phnom Pehn for further training later this year.

Health awareness is one of the major topics in the life skills education provided as part of the programme to prepare orphaned young adults to adapt to independent living.  The classes include a visit to the local hospital as well as classes where they discuss different health issues and how they can live their lives to best avoid
disease and harm.  They are given nutritional advice and made aware of good hygiene practices – this is also covered in cookery classes.  In addition, they are taught to identify early warning signs of health problems so they can get treatment swiftly to minimize the impact. 

Keeping with the health theme for this update, some young adults supported by H.O.P.E from another children's center (Anjali House) have been putting their limited spare time to great use – helping to redecorate a local
maternity hospital.  The young guys gave up two weekends to clean, strip and paint the rooms – they are pictured enjoying the finished result -  very impressive work and something our programmes are trying to encourage - Cambodians volunteering to help other Cambodians.  We remain very proud of them all.
