Baby chicks have arrived!!!

By Julia Krepska | Founding Director

We have a full house - our grown up hens have now been joined by around 20 baby chicks. The young chicks will apparently start laying eggs in about 6 - 7 months. And the weirdest addition to the animal family is our pigeon who sems to think that he is a chicken - he walks like a chicken, eats like a chicken, and is basically following our hens everywhere. He goes to their chicken house at night where the boys made him a nice basket so it's warm for him.

The road outside of our children's home sadly now has a lot of trucks passing by so that creates a lot of dust - we have planted a lot of bamboo trees outside of our walls and they have grown very tall so we are managing to keep quite a lot of dust away.

The issues with the pollution, lack of recycling facilities and overall tendencies of people to just throw their rubbish on the road and burn plastic make Nepal quite difficult to live in now. We have decided to start doing more to help with these issues. Our children are all a great example to other children at their schools and that's a good start but definitely not enough. We are now working on adding more environmental elements to the curriculum that we are using within our different projects and we will be speaking to all local schools to be able to deliver awareness classes for the children and the parents.

We also had a meeting with an owner of a great eco-friendly factory where our Ram is working. It was a truly inspirational place - they make metal furniture, stoves that run on any biomass oil and paint from cow dung (and it doesn't smell!). They have a green space at the back where we met some goats, cows, rabbits - all happily roaming around. We agreed with the owner that we will work together to improve the environment in the area - they will look into setting up more recycling plants and we will deliver awareness training within the communities. So very ambitious plans for 2024 but definitely worth the effort!

We will keep you up to date with everything and as always - thank you soooo much for all the support!!
