Skills training for 200 learners in rural Zimbabwe

By Yolanda Million | Operations and Administration Manager

From the previous report, the VIA teams have made significant progress. This report provides insights into the activities carried out from January to date towards achieving the aims of the program.

THE VIRTUAL INNOVATION ACCELERATOR UPDATE(VIA)

VIA Captains Round Tables

Team Captains’ Round Table meetings are held every Friday to catch up on the activities of the venture teams. They provide reports of their activities, their needs, and advisor calls feedback. The team Captains were forthcoming in writing reports and sharing their updates in the meetings. In order to assist the team captains to sharpen their presentation skills, the meetings were chaired by the team captains. They were also responsible for organizing the meetings with assistance from EA. We hope to continue to cultivate ownership from the team captains going forward.

To ensure that there is an alignment between what team captains communicate and what is actually happening on the ground, the programs team set up an all team members meeting to assess and monitor their progress within the teams. An all members team meeting provides an opportunity to check on teamwork and the relationships between the team members.

VIA Teams Updates

Aqua-Verm Private Limited (Anderson High School)

Production: The team found a company that can supply them with breeding beds and training on how to harvest worms with minimal loss. They have been in constant communication with the company. After finalizing their agreements, they will send their fund request for EA to facilitate payments for them.

Company Registration: The team has also found a service provider who can help them to register their company. They are working on the name search for their company at the moment.

Company Bank Account and Personal Accounts: This will be possible once they get their company registered.

Marketing: The team is marketing their services to their neighboring schools. This was done through surveys with neighboring schools that they realized that waste management is troubling these institutions and they offered one of the schools a deal where they deliver their waste to them. This waste is the key raw material in breeding worms. The challenge that remains is to come up with a pricing model for this service they intend to offer and to also make sure production scales grow fast enough to cope with the supply of the waste. Currently, they are using waste materials (kitchen waste) from Anderson High School.

Southern Sporting Index (Tongwe High School)

Website Development: The team has made a prototype that they are using with the students at their school as they continue to learn what they want their application to offer. They are focusing on marketing their application to athletes in Matabeleland South. Find the attached link to the prototype; Southern Sporting Index. The team has received their VIA Gadgets (Laptop and 5 mobile phones).

Ace Microfinance (St Dominic's High School)

Bank Accounts Opening: The team has managed to open personal accounts and is yet to wait for legal registration to open the company account.

Research and Marketing: The team discovered that with the seed capital they have available it might be difficult to start offering loans especially to informal traders as there is a high risk of not getting it back. They are considering shadowing a bigger organization that does microfinance. They also had a meeting with the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe through one of the parents' connections, and the information they also received shows that they will not be able to be legally registered as a microfinance company as their funds are way below the expected amount of $20,000 USD.

Tassel Private Limited (Mutendi High School)

Marketing:The marketing team is focused on establishing marketing prospects.

Acquisition of Stocks: The production team has reverted to the analysis stage for parallel running due to some negative feedback. The team is now focusing on the acquisition of biodegradable cups that they plan to start selling at Easter. They aim to have 4500 cups to sell at 30 cents each.

Vielog (Eveline High School)

Website Development: Discussions with a web designer on web layout have already started. Once completed, the team will review and determine the next steps for designing the entire website.

Opening of Personal Bank Accounts:The team has successfully opened personal bank accounts.

Marketing and Research:The team will be conducting a marketing survey to validate their business venture and gain a better understanding of their target market. The survey will target students, parents of students, and business owners. They will conduct both online and physical surveys to gather comprehensive data.

Teams-Advisor Catch up Calls

The venture advisor introductory calls commenced on the 25th of January 2024. These calls provide an opportunity for our learner entrepreneurs to connect with their assigned advisors, who are industry experts and leaders from across the globe. The advisors will provide our students with mentorship, guidance, and feedback as they work on their innovative business ventures. We are grateful to our advisors for volunteering their time and expertise to support our students and our mission.

The venture advisor calls with the teams are proceeding according to the schedules created by the teams and advisors.

Emergination Africa continues to be grateful to its donors and the GlobalGiving team who make all this work possible.
