Challenge

Smallholder farmers in Kalomo of Southern, Zambia face droughts, erratic rainfall, soil degradation, and high farming input costs, leading to low yields, food insecurity, and poverty. Limited access to agricultural information and farmer learning opportunities reduces adoption of sustainable practices. This project will support 500 farmers through agroecology training, community radio, demonstration plots, and farmer learning groups to improve resilience, productivity, and livelihoods.

Solution

The project will increase farmers' knowledge and adoption of agroecological practices through community radio programmes, demonstration plots, farmer learning groups, and community dialogues. Farmers will learn practical techniques such as compost making, crop diversification, agroforestry, and water conservation. Peer learning, extension support, and behaviour change campaigns will help households improve productivity, food security, and resilience to climate change.

Long-Term Impact

The project will reduce food insecurity, low agricultural productivity, and vulnerability to climate change among smallholder farmers in Kalomo district. At least 500 farmers will directly adopt sustainable agroecological practices, while approximately 300,000 community members will benefit indirectly through improved access to agricultural knowledge through radio, stronger local food systems, enhanced livelihoods, and greater climate resilience.
