The project is part of the conservation and rehabilitation of the marine and land-based ecosystems which deals with environmental protection and conservation, disaster risk reduction and disaster recovery. With a premise that resilient communities depend on the empowered locals, OISCA is taking an integrated step-by-step approach for the ridge-to-reef sustainable land and marine resource management focusing in mangrove and upland forest rehabilitation activities.
Almost two years since Cyclone Winston hit communities of Nakarotubu District in Ra Province yet the local residents are still having a hard time recovering. The locals are facing difficulties in sourcing water for their daily needs, especially in summer season. Sometimes, schools have to be closed due water scarce- there is no enough supply to cater for all. Moreover, the absence of upland forest and mangrove vegetation made the local villagers vulnerable from natural disasters.
Other than the provision of water tanks to collect rain water, OISCA is collaborating with the Fijian Government Ministries such as the Ministry of Fisheries and Forest, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Indigenous Affairs and Ministry of Local Government to mainstream the importance of upland and mangrove reforestation project involving the local residents. OISCA will also assist small-scale farmers by introducing agroforestry to diversify their income so to reduce threats to forestry.
Establishment of model resilient communities with healthy upland and mangrove forests shielding the local villagers from natural disasters such as cyclone and tsunami. Committed local communities who will be actively involved in the project implementation leading to the reduction of flooding, landslides and drought occurrence. Moreover, improved quality of life of the locals through the introduced agroforestry activities/diversified income generating source.
