March 2017 report

By Angie Gust | Project Leader

March 2017

Dear Friends,

Thank you so much for supporting the PATHWAYS scholars. As you know, we recently selected 8 new PATHWAYS scholars, four boys and four girls.  Below is an update from Brian, our senior scholar and soon to be alumnus, and an unpdate from Jackline, one of our new scholars.

Brian  - senior scholar

We are now at day 85 of the doctors’ strike and day 33 of the lecturers strike. The leaders seem not keen at all on resolving these strikes.  (note- the strike is now over)  For this reason we could not sit our supplementary exams. We were advised to wait until the strikes are over. This has also affected the deployment of our colleagues who graduated last year.

Currently, I am doing some online projects and fortunately we've had some companies organize for seminars and short courses meant to equip us with the much needed skills ahead of our internship.

And on the sidelines, I have been working with Lucky (one of the new scholars) to help him with his proposal. The peer mentorship has been a success. According to the scholars they've gained a lot from their interaction with their respective mentors.  We're now working on an action plan towards the implementation of Lucky's proposal.

Jackline – new scholar

I completed my end of semester exams well. When in my home village, I immediately started working on my project. The very first step was successful. I was able to bring together women who are economically disadvantaged but willing to work hard with a purpose of changing the current face of the community. Marylyn (alumnus) will be mentoring me all through.  She is so nice and a great source of encouragement to me.

I am determined to make the best out of every single opportunity and am willing to succeed. I will let you know about the exact structure of my project and what it is exactly about. I am still consulting madam Catherine and Marylyn my mentor.

We are extremely grateful for your continued support in this program to develop future leaders through education and leading community development projects.

Sincerely,

Angie Gust
