Dear Friends,
Thank you so much for supporting the PATHWAYS scholars. Today we want to report on the progress of fourth year scholars Eunita, Marylyn and Justus have made in their academic lives and with their community projects.
Eunita
Currently, I have now begun my final year in nursing school. I am so happy about that and look forward to completing it successfully.
Before the holiday break from my nursing studies, I went to the Coast with my class. I am happy to report that the visit to there was quite a learning experience. During the short stay there, we visited various places. On the first day, we visited an International Center for Reproductive Health (I.C.R.H.). There are health workers there who work closely with the community in order to cover reproductive health issues. Their key populations are the sex workers, and drug users. Their area of interest includes reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, family planning and gender based violence issues.
We also visited a water treatment plant to practically see the water treatment process that we were theoretically taught in class. Apart from the treatment we were also taught on the various tests performed to test water quality like determining the specific gravity and analysis of impurities.
It was a very informative field trip and I learned a lot about public health nursing.

I am happy to report that my community group has been able to expand the brick making business that is my PATHWAYS project. We have managed to make 10,000 bricks in this project. We have even been able to hire 4 youths; they are glad they got the opportunity. Apart from the brick making business, one of the group members came up with the idea of making bee hives. Though it was not in the budget, after deliberations, the members agreed to drive some savings and a bit of the project funds into that. We now have the1st lot complete; 20 hives have been made and are waiting to be sold. We are hoping this picks well as it will diversify the project.

My PATHWAYS project focuses on mentorship because of the very high rates of school dropout and large decline in scores in the national exams among students in my home area, Ng’ari region. I am partnering with the the Samburu Women Enterprise Group. Among our youth group, about 90 percent are currently in high school with about 4 candidates this year. Among them,we have lots of expectations from them especially that they will get good grades. We are hopping for the best and encouraging them to do their best and join the university.
Thank you for your continued support. I am grateful for your assistance in this effort to educate youth, especially girls.
