In Guatemala, more than 55% of the population is in poverty and extreme poverty. The lucky ones have a home, a roof to sleep and food to cover their breakfast, lunch and dinner.
But the other part is selling candy and other things on buses, in parks, on the streets to survive; for the most part, children are the ones that you see doing this and when you talk to them, they tell you that they have not eaten all day or days.
In Antigua Guatemala, surviving every day is an arduous task for families who have nothing more than what they are wearing, women suffer from abuse and become pregnant without wanting it, children are exploited and trafficked and men do not find work because of their addictions of drugs and alcohol.
As of November, the decrease of temperatures in the national territory is recorded every year, due to the approach of Cold Fronts and High Pressure Systems that affect the country.
Therefore, the Executive Secretariat of the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction -SE-CONRED-, activated the National Protocol for Season of Temperature Descent 2019-2020, as well as coordination with municipal authorities for the empowerment of shelters action that entails the Declaration of Yellow Municipal Alerts that is maintained in 8 municipalities of the country.
More than 3,000 persons were attended in shelters due to the cold weather this last month in Guatemala.
We, The God's Child Project, as an organization that ensures the care and well-being of those who need us most, provide them with a shelter, a roof and a meal that will give them some hope that not all is lost.
Every day we house more than 100 men, women and children of all ages. We provide a plate of food, psychological support, hygiene, showers and a place to spend the cold night.
Our homeless shelter staff is responsible for keeping everything in order and thanks to the help of our volunteers they have the opportunity to share their stories and feel important again.
They feel like home and appreciate having the support of the institution that day by day supports to improve their integrity and security by keeping them safe of the insecurities that the night brings.
