Since our last interim report, we have funded two new projects!
Coral Bay Community Council (St. John) will be removing debris along environmentally sensitive shorelines and non-public roads in Coral Bay in order to help prevent future storm damage.
Clean Sweep Frederiksted (St. Croix) will be combatting issues of urban decay within the town of Frederiksted by training residents to create garden areas throughout the community and creating an opportunity to provide financial and food stability, social empowerment and beautification of empty and abandoned lots.
Updates on these two projects will be available in the next interim report.
We are pleased to share updates with you regarding the hurricane recovery and resiliency projects funded through your support!
UVI Campus Recycling Project
Project leaders and students held a series of pilot recycling events throughout the St. Thomas campus and are working on deploying new posters, bins and signage throughout both the St. Thomas and St. Croix campus locations. UVI was able to leverage CFVI funding in order to get additional outdoor recycling bins from Keep America Beautiful and assistance from the EPA to conduct a Territory wide waste audit. Funds are also being used to support student ambassadors for the recycling program, who educate fellow students and do quality control on items placed into the various bins.
We Grow Food Bordeaux Farmers Fruit Tree Restoration Project
A St. Thomas-based agricultural coalition, We Grow Food used grant funds to support a native tree restoration project. A total of 30 farmers received free fruit trees in August 2019. Thousands of fruit trees were destroyed during the two hurricanes in 2017 and many of these trees contributed to local farmers incomes. Farmers received two each of: Mango, Sugar Apple, Soursop, Avocado, Guava, Caimito, Egg fruit, and Starfruit; and three each of: Dwarf Coconut, Lime, Lemon, Golden Apple, and Mamie Apple to replant.
St. George Village Botanical Garden Trees for St. Croix
The St. George Village Botanical Garden Trees for St. Croix project was launched in an Arbor Day tree-planting ceremony on September 27, 2019. The project aims to grow 6,000 trees during the next six months for distribution to the public at no cost. Funding has also allowed for the purchase of equipment and operation of the nursery to develop a seed bank where native seeds can be stored. Seed Stewards will commit to collect, save, and share seeds with the Botanical Garden from at least one plant, including herbs, edible crops, ceremonial plants, natives, trees, and shrubs. Seed Stewards will ensure their seeds are carefully grown, skillfully selected for saving, and securely stored.
