Building Family Dreams is an 18-month holistic program designed to keep children out of orphanages and where they belong: with their family and community. Most children in Thai orphanages are there due to poverty and not orphanhood. This program provides wraparound support to assist families in keeping their children at home. It includes an income generating grant to break the cycle of poverty as well as monthly workshops and family field trips to fun locations.
In Thailand, 95% of children in orphanages have families, and the children are placed in orphanages due to poverty, not abuse or loss of parents. This breakdown in family structure causes a loss of culture, language and family ties as well as having an impact on development and mental health for the children.
Each Building Family Dreams cohort focuses on 8 families who have placed children in orphanages or those who are at high risk of placing them in orphanages due to a variety of issues. This program is an 18-month holistic, wraparound program that alternates educational workshops about family strengthening and positive parenting with family day trips to local activities to focus on quality time in a family. Families also receive an income generating grant to help break the cycle of poverty.
This project will strengthen family bonds, help stabilize family finances and educate parents on healthy ways to raise their children as well as help their children attain higher education. Families who complete the program will have a positive impact on other families in their community and connect other parents to Jojo's Sanctuary to receive assistance in other areas. While only 8 families participate in each cohort, their impact on their community post-graduation is exponential.
