Getting the ground ready
Getting the ground ready

The ground has been broken by the Live and Learn in Kenya School children. What a joy this celebration was. For the first time, the children were allowed to break the ground and sing out their joy and appreciation. Of course the entire Live and Learn in Kenya staff were present, along with the builder and architect - who also took the shovel into their hands to help break the ground.

Now all we have to do is raise the funds! The construction company has generously agreed to allow us to pay as we go. In other words, they will build with the funds available and stop when we've run out. So we will have to do our level best to keep the funds coming in so that there won't be long construction pauses necessary.

Does anyone have any great fundraising ideas? I'd love to hear them.

Here's to the new construction phase of the Live and Learn in Kenya Education Center in Nakuru, Kenya - where our children are coming from one of the poorest slums in Nakuru - but KNOW that "Education is the Key to the Future"!

Asante sana - Thank you for your kind support.

The Present "Dining Hall" From Outside
The Present "Dining Hall" From Outside

We know how difficult it is to raise funds at this time of year when people are getting ready for the lovliest time of the year - vacation - and are closely contemplating their financial situation.

With this in mind - we are especially thankful to the donors who decide to share to make this wonderful dream come true. Our present "dining hall" is everything but hygienic. The dry and dusty Nakuru days make it impossible to keep clean and the wind blows dust and fine sand on the children's plates. The wet and very rainy Nakuru days leave the room wet and flooded and the furnitute rotting. Not a lovely sight to see or a place to feel safe and protected.

Besides the less than positive situation in the makeshift dining hall, a major problem is getting the food from the kitchen - which is about 100 meters away. This means that the mamas who have been cooking all morning must then carry the very heavy cooking pots over to the dining hall - no matter what the weather is  - rainy or windy and dusty... The children also have to stand outside waiting in line for their meal - no matter how the weather is.

The difference that the dining hall will make is indescribable. The meals will be cooked in our modern kitchen and slid over the counter through a window to the waiting child in the dining hall. All of the children will be able to eat together so that the meals will be nice and warm and fresh. Nobody will need to weather the weather - whatever the weather...

In addition to being a dining hall - it will also be an auditorium where the children can meet for extra-curricular activities, pledge of allegiance on rainy days, workshops and parents' meeting.

We are hoping to be able to open the doors of the new dining hall when the new school year begins in January 2019.

We need all of the help we can get.

Asante sana - thank you so much

Current Dining Hall - Make a dust-free difference!
Current Dining Hall - Make a dust-free difference!

When we officially and ceremoniously opened the doors to the new kitchen in November 2017 everyone was ecstatic - with good reason! The kitchen is modern, clean and easy to keep clean. Everyone is happy and very appreciative for this wonderful kitchen. But now the question is: "How long must the children go on eating in the dusty make-shift woodshed with its dirt floor with only holes for windows?" Dust and wind are not a good combination when there are no doors or windows that open and close.

The children who come to the Live and Learn in Kenya Education Center are living in the slums of Nakuru or on extremely poor shambas. The meals that are provided by LLK are usually their only meals of the day.

It's time to get back to the drawing board! There is a large door and window at the front of the kitchen which is meant to go out to the dining hall one day. And that day really should be sooner than later. We are now raising funds for the dining hall so that the children can eat in a clean and hygienic environment. As it will be built directly attached to the kitchen, the concept is that meals will be given out over the counter through the large window to at least 200 children at a time.

It will be a very large dining hall as it will also be used for other school activities and meetings. This will be a construction - like the others at our school - that will be built to last for generations of pupils. It will be amazing to be able to open the doors of the new dining hall in November 2018 during our next visit. You can help make it possible! Every donation - large or small - makes a difference - a lasting difference. We can do it with your help.

HARAMBEE - Let's join hands for this common cause - and really make a difference in the lives of poverty stricken children!
