Unsafe School Toilets Cause Girls to Miss Classes

By Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri | Project Leader

Dear Donors,

Thank you for your support of the Build Separate Toilets for Girls in Public Schools project. We sincerely appreciate your generosity and concern for the wellbeing of girls whose education is affected by inadequate sanitation facilities.

For many girls in public schools, attending class becomes difficult when there is no safe and private toilet available. In some schools, students rely on poorly maintained pit latrines, open spaces, or nearby bushes. These conditions expose girls to health risks, discomfort, embarrassment, and safety concerns. The challenge becomes even greater during menstruation, when privacy and hygiene are essential.

We are grateful for the donations received so far. However, the amount available is not yet sufficient to begin construction activities. Additional support is needed before site selection, materials procurement, and construction can commence.

This project seeks to provide separate toilet facilities for girls in selected public schools across Kogi, Nasarawa, and Benue States. The planned facilities will include secure cubicles, handwashing stations, and sanitary disposal options designed to improve privacy and hygiene for female students.

Poor sanitation facilities remain one of the overlooked reasons why some girls miss classes or struggle to attend school regularly. When schools lack appropriate facilities, girls may choose to stay home rather than face uncomfortable or unsafe conditions.

We remain committed to improving learning environments for girls and continue working toward the resources needed to launch the first phase of this project. As progress is made, we look forward to sharing updates, photographs, and stories from the schools that will benefit.

Thank you for helping create safer and more dignified school environments for girls.

Warm regards,
Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri
