Summary

This 3-year project empowers 500 small and marginal farmers in Tamil Nadu's rural, semi-arid Andapadakki region. Through water conservation structures, sustainable farming, soil health improvement, and capacity-building training, the initiative addresses poverty and climate challenges. It fosters self-reliance, prevents precarious migration, and promotes economic stability. By improving resource management and environmental resilience, the project benefits 500 families and their communities.

Challenge

The semi-arid Andapadakki region faces extreme poverty, water scarcity, and worsening soil health, aggravated by climate change. Farmers, predominantly from indigenous and marginalised communities, rely on rain-fed agriculture but face erratic rainfall and resource inequity. Rising costs force families into cycles of debt or migration to urban areas for unskilled, low-paying jobs. Without sustainable solutions, these challenges perpetuate poverty, leaving families vulnerable to exploitation.

Solution

The project will address poverty and climate challenges in the semi-arid Andapadakki region by conserving water through check dams, farm ponds, and revived irrigation tanks. Soil fertility will improve with crop rotation, green manure, and silt application. Income will be diversified through goat rearing, fruit plantations, and afforestation. Climate-smart training, workshops, and exposure visits will equip farmers with adaptive skills, while community participation ensures long-term resilience.

Long-Term Impact

The initiative will build community resources like check dams, farm ponds, and revive irrigation tanks to ensure water availability. Soil fertility will be enhanced through crop rotation, green manure, and silt application, while income will diversify via goat rearing, fruit plantations, and afforestation. By promoting collective action through community-led participatory processes, the project will address systemic inequalities.
