Three members of the Civil Service Hospital Bone Marrow Transplant team (Dr. Bishesh Paudyal, Dr. Sameer Neupane, and registered nurse Devika Danekhu) completed their training in bone marrow transplant at the University of Illinois Medical Center and returned to the Civil Service Hospital, Kathmandu last month.
While in Chicago, the trainees rotated in the University of Illinois Medical Center Blood Bank and bone marrow stem cell transplantation center. They became familiar with the comorbidities and epidemiology of various blood cancers, especially as it applies in India and Nepal, and developed the skills associated with stem cell transplantation. This training also helped the team establish methodologies for ongoing communication and training after they returned to their home country.
The team is expected to start the bone marrow transplant services at the civil service hospital soon.
