While we continue to gather funds to start building the disability centre in Palorinya Refugee Settlement, I wanted to share a story with you of a refugee boy called Modi.
Carwyn Hill, HHA’s CEO and co-founder, met Modi on one of his first visit’s to South Sudan and Uganda. It was a meeting that stood out for Carwyn as Modi was in a terrible state, malnourished and tied to a tree. His mother was desperate, unable to feed him and unable to care for his special needs. She feared he would run away and get lost if she didn’t tie him to the tree.
Due to Modi’s malnurishment, he was thin and lacking in life. The reality was at that time that Modi was not far from death and his mother knew that.
One of the first actions HHA took in East Africa was to ensure Modi’s mother received emergency food aid for him - a product called Plumpy Nut designed to treat severe malnutrition. The Community Rehab Workers we now support in the refugee settlement also work with Modi and his mother to help meet his disability needs.
When Carwyn went to visit Modi and his family again just a few months ago, Modi wasn’t at home. His mother reported with delight that he was out playing football with friends! When Carwyn caught up with him, he saw a totally different boy to the one he met the first time. Physically and mentally he was transformed which brought great joy and encouragment to Carwyn.
Modi’s mother said she would have buried him by now if it wasn’t for the help she received.
The disability centre and the work around it will mean more people just like Modi can be helped. So we’re passionate about making this project happen. Life for everyone in a refugee settlement is very hard but for the most vulnerable like Modi, more support is desperately needed.
Thank you so much for supporting this work.
