Up to July 2015, 50 houses and 10 church buildings had been rebuilt in Bohol, Cebu and Tacloban. Six trauma healing and de-briefing trainings and seminars have been conducted as church based programmes. 231 people have been trained to identify and respond to trauma in both adults and children, and 125 individuals have been equipped in disaster preparedness and processing for children through the ‘Operation Safe’ curriculum.
Restoring lives and communities after such a powerful disaster starts with laying down the foundations - building new, stronger, durable shelters and houses.
Our partner has also been involved with running capacity building programmes for the livelihood of people, through EPIC Solutions Business Training. This helps the community rise up by starting small entrepreneurial businesses and gives advice in good financial management of income. Ongoing projects include house repairs and WASH projects for those communities lacking toilet facilities and continuing trauma care, especially for pastors and families who are directly affected by disasters and actively involved in relief and development work.
The current phase of development involves 50 houses being built which are specifically designed to resist high winds and flooding. They are made from materials that are locally sourced and will be sturdier in the long term. The location for this phase of the project is Kinatarkan Island.
In July 2015 representatives from our partner met with the local community leader, the Barangay Captain of Hagdan. The next day the team went house to house to 350 families in 5 areas inviting them to a community meeting about the project the following day in the Barangay Hall.
Around 150 - 200 people attended that meeting and this lead to a list of 42 families to be assessed as the initial beneficiaries for the construction project. Visits were then made to these families to evaluate their situation. 31 families were assessed initially in 3 areas which resulted in 36 individuals being identified as potential beneficiaries.
The local people requested the use of wood instead of steel because of equipment availability.
The work has been underway in Kinatarkan since July. They are currently working on the 26th house and are hoping to finish all 50 houses by 1st week of November 2015
