Construction of a new school project report

The year 2017 has come to an end and we all look forward to the coming year. It is with hope and good faith that Community Foundation for the Western Region of Zimbabwe(CFWRZ) wishes to successfully fulfil its mandate of enabling disadvantaged communities better themselves by addressing social and economic challenges facing people in the western part of Zimbabwe.

It is the desire of the organisation to assist the people of Mangwe District of Matabeleland south province to construct Mapukane Secondary School. This school will benefit approximately 400 children from four remote villages who have to walk over 20km each day to reach the nearest school. During the long walks, the children, especially the girls, are exposed to risks such as rape, kidnapping and unwanted pregnancies.

Communities saw the need to construct a school for their children and began making bricks and collecting locally available materials. Motivated by the communities’ determination and enthusiasm, CFWRZ sought to provide external support through soliciting funds using the GlobalGiving platform. A total of US$2 526, 41 was received from friends and donors through this platform. The funds were used to purchase 230 bags of cement. A total amount of US$37 474, 00 is still needed for the completion of the project.

Completion of this project will not only help provide a conducive learning environment for the children but will also encourage the spirit of self-development amongst communities who will no longer wait for hand outs but will work with what they have to improve their lives. Upon completion, this project is expected to achieve the following outcomes:

  • Reduction in the school dropout rate
  • Reduction in the risks e.g. rape, encountered by the children on their long walks to school
  • Improved pass rate
  • Improved social behaviour amongst young people

CFWRZ continues to make efforts to match the funds raised so far. Proposals were developed and sent to the Japanese embassy as well as the Australian Embassy. Unfortunately the proposal to the Japanese embassy was not successful. We remain optimistic that the Australian embassy may look at the proposal with favour. CFWRZ continues to solicit small donations from friends and partners and hopes that construction of the school will commence next year.

Communities remain motivated and are enthusiastic that this project will be a success. These communities are appealing for your continued support and believe that even though it may take some time before they finally realise their dream but with the support of the world they will reach greater heights. It is only through external support that this dream will become a reality.

Education plays a pivotal in bringing about social, political and economic development. It is only through attaining a solid education that one or even nations at large are able to make learned decisions and therefore escape the clutches of not only practical poverty but also mental poverty. The Foundation is therefore appealing for continued support to make the lives of the children of Mangwe district a whole lot better.
