Books Beyond Borders: Supporting Refugee Students

By Joah McGee | Executive Director

When we launched the Bring Offline Learning Kits to Remote Schools campaign, our vision was to equip schools in conflict-affected communities with portable digital libraries that would allow students to access educational resources without an internet connection.

While we did not reach our fundraising goal, we are incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed. Every donation matters, and rather than waiting indefinitely for additional funding, we chose to invest the funds in educational initiatives that advance the same mission: ensuring children can continue learning despite conflict and displacement.

One of these efforts supported refugee schools in Khaikhy and Lopu Camps along the Myanmar–India border, where hundreds of children have fled ongoing violence in Myanmar. Many arrived after days of traveling through forests with little more than the clothes they were wearing. Schools in the camps experienced a rapid increase in enrollment, but families were unable to provide even the most basic learning materials.

Through this initial phase of support, 300 refugee students received essential educational supplies, including notebooks, pencils, pens, erasers, sharpeners, pouches, and rain protection. These materials reduced the financial burden on displaced families and helped students return to the classroom with confidence and dignity. Teachers also reported improved motivation among students as they were once again equipped to participate in lessons.

Although this is different from the project's original goal of deploying offline learning kits, it represents an important first step toward expanding educational access for children whose schooling has been disrupted by conflict. The need remains urgent. Schools continue to face shortages of classrooms, textbooks, teaching materials, and other educational resources as more displaced children arrive seeking safety and an opportunity to learn.

Thank you for believing that education should not stop because of war, displacement, or a lack of internet access. Your support has already helped children continue learning today while laying the foundation for the broader vision of bringing offline digital learning resources to remote schools in the future.
