Bringing Hope to Flood Victims in South Sudan November 2021
By Linda Stephens - SSHCO Team Member
We always look forward in sharing with our friends how our work is going. We have made progress in providing better service to the people in the displacement camp. Flood waters continue to rise in many areas which has resulted in more families seeking refuge. There are now 100,000 people in the displacement camp.
Our maternal health continues to be a major focus for us. Our midwife is the only one in our area of the camp. Therefore, she keeps busy provide assistance to the mothers and their babies. She has delivered dozens of babies safely. Recently she traveled to one of the other mobile clinics in the camp with our clinical officer. A mother had given birth but had serious bleeding. Because our staff was there to provide the needed medicines and help, the mother and her baby survived.
Recently the new mothers were invited to a meeting 'under the tree' to share their ideas on how we could improve our services. With the soft cries of their babies in the background, mothers shared their ideas. As a result we have purchased a birthing bed and other essential equipment to our once empty mobile clinic.
There are many challenges in South Sudan. Our mobile clinic stands as an example to the people that they have not been forgotten. Our staff are providing hope to where it has been lost.
