At PLAS, we believe that lasting change happens when children and their caregivers are supported together. Through our HOPE Program in Homa Bay County, Kenya, families receive livelihood support through poultry farming while also participating in counseling and educational support activities.
Recently, our team visited participating families to monitor the health and growth of the chickens distributed through the program. We were encouraged to see that many caregivers are successfully applying the skills they learned during training and are working hard to build more stable incomes for their families.
During these visits, we met Godwill, a young participant who dreams of becoming an agricultural scientist someday. Before joining the program, Godwill often struggled with his studies because his caregiver had limited understanding of the importance of education, and school supplies were difficult to afford.
Since participating in the program, things have started to change. His caregiver has become more involved in his education, helping provide learning materials and creating a quiet environment where he can study. As a result, his school performance improved during the last term.
Godwill has also developed a strong sense of responsibility through caring for the family's chickens. He proudly shared that he enjoys feeding them and takes charge of poultry-related tasks during school holidays. Through this experience, he is learning not only practical agricultural skills but also discipline, commitment, and confidence in his own abilities.
At the same time, our monitoring visits revealed challenges that many families still face. Some chickens were affected by parasites and disease, and we also identified nutritional deficiencies in homemade feed. In response, we are planning additional training with agricultural specialists so families can improve poultry health and maximize the benefits of their small businesses.
Stories like Godwill's remind us that when families gain opportunities to earn income and caregivers become engaged in their children's education, young people can begin to imagine a brighter future for themselves.
Thank you for following our work. Although our GlobalGiving community is still growing, your support can help more children like Godwill stay in school, develop their potential, and pursue their dreams.
