June 2021 was the month for students to be aware of nutrition and how it plays a part in their lives. In the first week of June 2021, they began to study food, first making a daily food list of their own food intake. They also learned to analyze, based on the food pyramid, to see whether the food they ate met their nutritional needs. This learning was packaged in the theme of Cooking Science, run as a project throughout June 2021.
The state of the pandemic did not dampen the enthusiasm of the children to learn. This could be seen from the high level of participation. A total of 46 children aged 7-11 years and 9 adolescents aged 12-14 years participated in Cooking Science lessons every day. With a total of 55 students participating, the activities were divided into two schedules. One group came in the morning and the other in the afternoon. Many activities were fortunately able to be undertaken outdoors. In addition, all activities were carried out by implementing health protocols, including limiting interactions between children – maintaining distance and not touching each other.
The limitations that exist during this pandemic have never limited their enthusiasm or joy in their daily participation. Every time they came to the Begawan Learning Centre, they came with enthusiasm and could not wait to experience new things.
They designed a Food Festival as their final project. Starting from imagining what they wanted to cook, they researched recipes, made a booklet of recipes for the food they cooked and illustrated their dishes. They also researched the history and benefits of the food they cooked. All was covered in the contents of their recipe books.
Finally, students learned to plan and analyze the required resources to calculate the Food Festival as a business. They confidently sold the food they cooked to the guests, which included teachers, parents, and other interested parties, who attended the Food Festival.
Through this activity, 8 children aged 5-7 years who are just learning to read, also attended every Friday. They learned to read and write by recognizing the ingredients and cooking them. Learning time always passed unnoticed for both the children and us, the staff, because of the joy and enthusiasm shown in every activity.
Thank you for the generosity of all GlobalGiving donors who assisted to enliven our activities for the village children in Payangan, Gianyar, Bali. 55 children learned about nutrition, their daily food requirements, and how to cook both local and international dishes. Such a collaboration as this fosters hope in the midst of current difficulties. Once again, we thank you for assisting to bring a bright future for the children, their families, and their community.
