After the opening ceremony, we finally moved in and there has been tremendous activity. The clinic has been quoted as “the liveliest place on the hospital grounds.” The peers lead weekly health educational sessions which include mental and reproductive health. There is also weekly salsa dancing. These classes are offered to adolescents regardless of their HIV status. The adolescents living with HIV continue to hold support group sessions.
From a clinical aspect, the hospital has shown much support by waiving many fees for the adolescents who otherwise would never be able to access care. This includes fees for opening files, basic laboratory work, counseling services, and reproductive health care! We will also have new social worker dedicated to street youth. Our adolescents are loving their new space.
Our next initiative is to make the grounds more welcoming. We will be utilizing donations for landscaping, including a dancing area, and benches. Unfortunately, we are trying to fight against stigma of street youth who attend the clinic. They tend to congregate on the side of the building. We are hoping to give them respectable seating as they wait to be seen.
I am so thankful for Dr. Apondi and Dr. Paula Braitsein who are incredible advocates and have made this clinic such a success!
