BGI Founder Cameron visited Sout Africa as part of a curriculum development projected funded by the German Development agency the GIZ. The GIZ is investing in leading sport for development programmes and Boxgirls was one of 7 consortiums they chose to fund. Local Boxgirls groups in schools in South Africa are being asked to contribute content for the new website www.tools.boxgirls.org.
Sports for development projects can become more sustainable by creating other income streams than pure fundraising. Arise, a non profit based in South Africa, has helped create a cooperative in the rural area of Laingsburg to make uniforms for school children and municipal workers. Profits are invested back in the cooperative and for the upkeep of local sport facilities.
To learn more about the cooperative and to get some advice to build one, have a look at our case study : http://tools.boxgirls.org/social-business/case-study/
After her visit to the cooperative, Cameron discussed challenges in Khayelitsha with the girls from the Vuzamanzi primary school Boxgirls group and what they want to achieve with Boxgirls: Safe places to train, no abuse and respect for girl children.
