On Sunday March 30th, Boxgirls International's Cameron, assisted by Lara from Boxgirls Berlin, hosted over 30 guests from the GIZ, the UN Office of Sport for Development and Peace and young leaders from over 14 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. It was the 8th camp led by Boxgirls founder and coach Heather Cameron. Previous camps were held in Qatar, Switzerland, Sweden, Japan and Korea.
We learned through small group discussions about gender in the sport for development context and the basics of the Boxgirls curriculum, now available at http://www.tools.boxgirls.org.
This camp has been a real success, thanks to the enthusiasm of all the participants during both the discussions and the boxing. Maclean, basketball player of the national Paralympics team from Ghana, told us with a smile that this was “the only section that made [him] sweat”. This boxing session contributed above all to change the point of view from participants about boxing. Ovenia from Nigeria confided us: "to be honest I looked at boxing as an aggressive sport, but it’s not aggressive… it’s help to build self-confidence and it’s based on the principles on concentration, focus, and self-esteem".
