A few months into the campaign of growing the Boxgirls International network beyond Nairobi, Khayelitsha and Berlin we are working hard to identify and meet local organisations that can adopt the Boxgirls method to strengthen women and girls in challenged neighbourhoods.
We are lucky to have been invited to conduct workshops on gender mainstreaming in sport and boxing for development in the Youth Leadership Camps (YLC) organised by the UN Office for Sport and Development for Peace. These camps are held about every four months at different locations around the globe and bring together youth leaders from Africa, the Middle East and Palestine. This year we’ve been to Doha, Qatar, and Stockholm, Sweden, and are just now preparing for the camp in Gwangju, South Korea. We are using these workshops not only to identify possible partners but also to work with the youth leaders who know best what’s needed in their communities. And sometimes our coaches from the sites in Kenya and South Africa join us to share their wealth of experience. We are happy to have Cynthia from Nairobi join us in Gwangju next month.
Another important partner in reaching out to local community projects is the German development service GIZ. In May we hosted a group of South African youth sports leaders in our gym in Berlin. Just after the Gwangju YLC Boxgirls founder Heather Cameron will head to Johannesburg to attend a matchmaking conference organized by GIZ and again bringing together grassroots projects and organisations that can provide them with technical support on all levels.
As you can see even during the summer months there is a lot going on driving the project forward. To get more up-to-date news be sure to check out our website and follow us on Facebook.
