Promoting Gender Equity - 16 days of activism

From October 2019 to February 2020, our project staff and participating girls kept engaging in a variety of activities in order to promote gender equity in South Africa:

Summary regular project activties 2019:

In 2019, 130 girls participated in Boxgirls Afterschool Clubs. The afterschool activities are run twice a week in 3 different primary schools in Kahyelitsha (Lulleka P.S. Chumisa P.S. and Vuzamanzi P.S. This year we partnered with another local girl empowering NPO Thope Foundation to join the best of our two programmes. Sessions were held Tuesday to Friday in each school semester combining sports and life skill training (teenage pregnancy, substance abuse prevention, career choices, goal setting,)

16 day of activism:

During the 16 days of activism we joint other NPOs from the community to jointly advocate on womens rights. The 16 days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that kicks off on November 25, the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women. It runs until December 10, Human Rights Day. We offered sports and our participants were able to showcase their learnings to community members.

Girls in the Lead Workshop:

On November 28th, we hosted a Workshop, funded by the international Network Girls in the Lead, a network that supports organizations working in the field of gender and sport for development. Our workshop was welcoming 10 participants from different organizations to discuss how to create gender awareness among coaches. During the workshop, the role of coaches in regards to gender equity was discussed and the different participating organisations supported each other in regards to tackling gender stereotypes within their target groups and their community.

Ongoing activities in 2020

In 2020, we still run our home work club on a regular basis. Additionally, it is planned to host another workshop in cooperation with the network Girls in the Lead. Within this cooperation a manual for gender equity through sports is currently being produced and shall be published this year.

We thank all donors for the ongoing support. Without your help our work would not be possible. Let's keep raising our voices in order to reach gender equity in sports.

Thank you!
