Another half year with exciting programmes and more strong girls for more safe communities! Once again, following our goal of empowering girls and young women to broaden their current and future opportunities, we offered programmes that focussed on strengthening knowledge of safety and health, developing the self-esteem, violence negotiation skills and social capital of girls.
Girls Go Forward in Afterschool Clubs
We successfully further implemented the Girls Go Forward project in partnership with the Thope Foundation that continued this October at the Vuzamanzi Primary School, Lulleka Primary School and Chumisa Primary School. Within the afterschool clubs the participating girls were taught in self-esteem, body awareness, violence negotiation skills and social capital by providing life skill training with box exercises and sport games. On the weekends this was complemented with the Boxgirls’ Maths and Sport hubs.
Active holidays with the Holiday Club
Another holiday club took place in October where the alumnae of our Afterschool Clubs and girls from the surrounding communities were offered an intense course of the condensed life skills programs of Thope Foundation and Boxgirls’ sports program. It was great to see how the girls learned how to concentrate on their goals and to gain trust in themselves to reach them. After the Holiday Club they were ready to share their learnings with the community.
Ubuntu – “I am because we are”
In September we attended the Laureus Sport for Good South Africa Summit 2019 in Cape Town organised by Laureus South Africa. For three days all Laureus partners came together to network, discuss, talk about their work and share their knowledge. During workshops, talks of guest speakers and presentations we felt how this year’s theme “Ubuntu” - the universal bond that connects us all – was more than just a saying but the premise to change the world through sport.
