Wildfires across Kalimantan, Indonesia, are spreading amid dry conditions, creating thick haze and hazardous air quality in affected communities. This emergency project will help families impacted by the fires and smoke through urgent assistance such as food, clean water, masks, hygiene supplies, and other essential relief items, while supporting Human Initiative's emergency response in the most affected areas.
Wildfires and haze are intensifying across Kalimantan. On 19 August, 518 high-confidence hotspots were detected in West, Central, and South Kalimantan, more than four times the previous day. In Kotawaringin Barat alone, 189 fire incidents had burned 859.49 hectares by 18 August. In Banjarbaru, visibility fell to about 400 meters, while PM2.5 reached 389.4 g/m, a hazardous level, disrupting daily life, transport, livelihoods, and public health.
Human Initiative will provide rapid emergency assistance in affected communities based on field assessments and urgent needs. Support may include protective masks, clean water, food, hygiene supplies, essential relief items, and logistics for distribution. With hazardous haze already disrupting roads and 12 flights at Syamsudin Noor Airport on 19 August, the response will prioritize vulnerable families and communities facing the highest exposure to smoke and wildfire impacts.
Timely support will help families reduce exposure to hazardous smoke, maintain access to essential supplies, and recover more safely while fires and haze continue. The project will also strengthen community preparedness and local response capacity in areas facing repeated wildfire risks. By supporting vulnerable households during this emergency, Human Initiative aims to reduce immediate health and protection risks while building greater resilience to future wildfire and haze events.
