Plundering the Baram Peace Park
A new report 'Plundering the Baram Peace Park' was launched this week. The report outlines how the Sarawak government and the ITTO dismantled the Baram Peace Park initiative by turning it into a logging project. The Borneo Project is in Tokyo and Kuala Lumpur this week for the report launch alongside our project partners at Bruno Manser Fund, SAVE Rivers and KERUAN.
The report calls for the immediate revocation of the Borneoland Timber Resources logging concession that overlaps with the Peace Park, accountability from decision makers and fulfilment of the promises made under the Baram Peace Park initiative. You can read the full report here.
Farewell to Pete Brosius
Anthropologist Pete Brosius, who conducted research with the Penan for four decades, passed away this month in Athens, Georgia, aged 72.
Pete had already spent years in Sarawak by the time logging conflicts attracted international attention. His research showed that Penan responses to logging varied substantially between communities. Those differences reflected distinct histories and relationships with neighboring peoples, government officials, traders, and the forest itself. His research remains some of the best writing on the complexities of Penan culture.
