81% of Grade 4 learners in South Africa are functionally illiterate. Read to Rise hopes to inspire 16,000 Grade 2-4 learners at 47 primary schools in Mitchells Plain to read. We will do two Class Programmes per class in 2026 and each learner will receive 2 new story books to take home, thus a total of 50,000 books will be given out.
81% of Grade 4 learners in South Africa cannot read for meaning. Two thirds of households in South Africa do not have any books for pleasure. Children are not inspired to read and do not own books.
Read to Rise will conduct class programmes for 25,000 Grade 2-4 learners at 47 primary schools in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town, South Africa. We hope to inspire children to read through our fun, interactive Class Programmes and give them a brand new story book to own - we believe that book ownership can ignite a love for reading! The books that we use are the Oaky Series, which each have an inspirational, positive life lesson.
If children love to read, they will excel at school and go on to become good constructive members of society. It all starts with reading. As our name says, we hope that children will read so that they can 'rise' in their personal development despite their circumstances.
