Managing with the blindman

By Ebele I Chukwuka | Mrs

From the meagre resources of C4HDI, we were able to buy sheets of zinc roofing to cover the kitchen apartment of the entire house housing the viable blind man. We considered fixing the zinc roof sheets in his siting room but discovered that very thick papers from cartons could do as a do-it-yourself improvised alternative. Same did we do for the living room and the corridor of the blind man. We aptly know that these papers should be checked and regularly checked for its integrity which we do with some volunteers. In one occasion of our visits, one volunteer surprised us all by donating a half bag of rice to the blind man. He received it with gratitude and immensely thanked the donor together with all the workers of C4HDI. Recall that the blind man is a public spirited individual who earned the respect of all in our community. Being friendly with the community people, he enjoys sources of protein from the hunters in our community. Most times, when the hunters trap many various games, they approach him with this gift of different games including rabbits, snails, fish, birds and etc. He participates vigorously, doing things he could for the benefit of the community. He involves in general cleaning of gutters and disposing refuse at the dump sites. On each of our visits, he gently complains about his dilapidated house and asks us about the project of having a small house. We always assure him of our requests from donors, eventhough we haven't had funds yet, it will come. He dislikes treating him like a disabled and so, most times, we discuss issues on a general note as we all are like him. This makes him feel at home better, then we could suggest of drawing the building plan according to what he discussed with us. From his description, we understand that a two bedroom bungalow will be okay for him. C4HDI has taken note about drawing up a plan for his house and registering it with the authorities concerned with approval of building plans in my community. We shall draw and put into cognizance, his in abilities which shall be part of the input in the intended plan. We plan that the house shall have a kitchen near the living room and the sitting room. This is because proximity is of essence in the proposed building for the bind man. Apart from this discussion, we considered also his love for singing and playing some musical instruments. We thought of enrolling him into musical training classes somewhere outside my local community.Buy we knew that we shall take it one step at a time.
