Lagos is losing trees fast while Nigeria shelters 900 bird species, many now endangered from habitat loss.Environment Aware And Restoration Network-EARN will plant 2,000 indigenous trees in Lekki, designed as " bird-home trees"to restore bird nesting and food source. Each tree=1 degree C cooler classrooms+1 bird family sheltered. In 3 years,EARN will create 10 utban bird corridors connecting parks in Lekki, reducing heat, and preventing extinction of local species like weavers/doves .
Lagos has less trees while Nigeria has 900 bird species at risk of extinction& it loses 5% tree coveryearly .Lekki heat is 38 degreesC+less trees=hotter schools and health risks Of 900 Nigeria's 900 bird species,18 are globally threatened.Lekki's native trees are cut for development.Lagos plant treesfor shade but birds need specific trees for nesting & fruit.
EARN wants to plant 2,000 indigenous "bird-home trees"including moringa, mangoes,African Almond, iroko which ptovides ne sting ,forks+fruit+insects 1 tree= 3 bird benefits.EARN will create10 birds corridors with trees 200m apart &train 30 youths to monitor nestsEARN aligns with Lagos 500 tree program while EARN adds "bird layer" to their plan.
EARN will not just fight heat with tree plant alone but build a home so Nigrria's 900 bird species survive next grneration. For people,2,000 trees = 2,000 cooler classrooms, less heat stress for 5,000+studentsFor Lagos, proof that"climate+ biodiversity work together. For birds,2,000 trees =2,000+new nesting sites.
