Its that dreaded time of the month

By Shana Greene | Co-Executive Director/Village Volunteers

Like clockwork, it's that dreaded time of the month again. Be it 26,27,28 or even 30 days between periods, it always seems shorter than it should be. I'm beyond menopause, so for me, the feeling of dread has come to its natural end.

I can't say however that my empathy for girls has diminished as my own dread has faded. Understanding what it's like to be unsupported, girls without sanitary protection are likely to miss school and do poorly on final exams leading to quitting school. One simple and natural life-giving function causes more pain than most inconveniences.

Years ago, I remember a young woman in Kenya took her life because she leaked on her school uniform and the whole school laughed and made fun of her. While that seems cruel and unusual, it's not unusual.  We all remember times when we weren't quite prepared but managed the task of caring for our hygiene needs. The Lenana Girls School is filled with innovative young women who make pads from corn husks. The fact that they saw this issue as one that they must solve for young girls who want to so they can achieve all that they are capable of achieving.

In India, it's the same issue and girls are very grateful to know that you and New Light cares for them and gives them support on all levels. We are so happy to work with extraordinary organizations. Thank you GlobalGiving!

Your support is a huge leg up for girls. Thank you!
