A First Hand Experience with the Mukti Women

By Shana Greene | Executive Director, Village Volunteers

Dear Donors,

I just got back from a trip to India after getting funding to open a library for the children of the red light district from All the Sky Foundation.  Spending two and a half weeks in the red light district had me marvelling at the extraordinary and effective work at New Light. For individuals and collectively New Light offers advocacy and solutions to the most difficult conditions for women who have been trafficked or are from intergenerational prostitution.

During my time in Kolkata, I was also able to spend time visiting the Mukti women at the sanitary pad project run by women who have escaped the sex trade. I can't stress enough the happiness I felt while there. Everyone is smiling and there is a definite feeling from the women of liberation which is the name they give their company. Mukti means liberated in Sanskrit.

We are still asking for donations and most of all, we'd need more subscriptions at $12 a month to buy from the women to provide to the many very vulnerable young girls to enable them to attend school regularly. The need seems unlimited but the solutions are also unlimited. The goal of the women of the sanitary pad project is to expand and I think that's commendable that these women now feel like entrepreneurs.

Thank you immensely for your contribution. The Mukti women do need help in soliciting donations for the pads so they can also donate them to the safe homes. I'm even more convinced that empowering women can be something as simple as serving their hygiene needs so they can study and live their best life.

Thank you!

Shana
