About 24% children graduating the orphanage live in closed institutions - psychoneurological mental homes (PNI). Many of them have been recognized as uneducable in childhood, and therefore they have never been taught. Most of time they spend in the territory of mental home, and as a result they are in fact excluded from the society.
Teia is one of them.
Previous school year Teia started to study at Big Change: PNI employees noted Teia’s potential and advised her to contact us. In their opinion Teia is able to study and live independently. All her live situation occurred due to the living in closed orphanage for children with educational neglet and due to the lack of educational programs for such children.
First Teia almost could not say anything about what she wanted from the educational process. But it turned out that it is really very necessary for her. We’ve noticed that Teia quickly learned how to navigate the subway, she asking a lot of questions, is interested in everything around her.
Then Teia said that she wanted to leave the PNI. To do this, she needs to pass medical and psychological-pedagogical commission, which will check whether she can live independently.
Teia need to learn a lot. She wants to become a chef. She wants to get a job that would allow her to study in the evenings. She wants to join Big Change educational trip this summer.
In Big Change Teia studies primary school curriculum, learns how to count time, money, and gains life experience outside the mental home. She wants to live free! And she can’t do it without your help!
