Bhumi's direct beneficiaries are the children who live in shelter homes or orphanages and community centers, where country’s low income population resides. The children go to state run schools during the week where the learning is ineffective due to various challenges like lack of teachers, lack of proper infrastructure, high student teacher ratio, no or very little focus on conceptual clarity.

We know that academic achievement is dependent on engagement, motivation, behavior and attendance. At Bhumi, all children receive personal attention from caring adults, explore new interests, receive academic support, develop a sense of belonging to a group, take on leadership roles and build a sense of self-esteem - reflected in better exam scores and classroom behaviors at school.

Volunteers register on Bhumi’s website or through campus ambassadors in colleges or corporates. They’re then oriented to Bhumi’s projects, inducted into the respective STEM project, trained in pedagogy, content and curriculum development. Following which, they are allocated to a shelter home/community center to teach either on Saturday or Sunday – thus, two unique batches of volunteers are allocated to the same set of children. Feedback is exchanged between the two volunteers after every class, to ensure smooth flow of classes.

The project is long-term, and the volunteers work with the children for at least three to five years. We believe that unless the intervention is sustained, the impact on the children will be negligible. Furthermore, we are also positive that by the end of the programme, the children would be equipped to progress further (in higher grades) with little support from external sources.

The outcome of our Mathematics project at the end of 2016-17 is as shown in the image above.

We thank you for your continued support
