Bhumi’s STEM programme has adopted an activity based approach, giving every child an opportunity to strengthen theoretical concepts through practical learning. For Mathematics, the methodology adopted addresses the child directly; through illustrations, the user can guide themselves with little or no help of a facilitator. For Science and Robotics, the texts cater directly to learners, asking them to work in groups, and instilling a ‘discovery’ approach to learning in place of the traditional textbook-centred ‘learning by rote’ methodology.
We are overjoyed that a few weeks back, some of the children from our robotics programme won the 'Best Innovator Award' and the 'Special Prize' at 'Young Kalam' Science Exhibition organised by HCL Foundation.
Bhumi's direct beneficiaries are children who live in shelter homes or orphanages. These children go to state run schools during the week. The primary problem being addressed by Bhumi's programmes are academic achievement and life skills. Together, they provide a holistic approach to support children from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
The project is long-term, and the volunteers work with the children for at least three to five years. We believe that unless the intervention is sustained, the impact on the children will be negligible. Furthermore, we are also positive that by the end of the programme, the children would be equipped to progress further (in higher grades) with little support from external sources.
