“Children must be thought How to Think, not What to Think!”
Purpose of Ignite Fest:
Battling challenges that arise from the lack of understanding concepts, personal attention, and a higher pace of content delivery, children are compelled to believe that the school’s interpretation of their academic performance is all that they are capable of. Bhumi’s volunteers understand this gap and are committed to delivering age-appropriate content to different learning styles and levels every weekend at shelter homes across India.
About Ignite Fest:
Ignite Fest is an Annual Inter-Home Event which is a culmination of the learnings by children and an opportunity to apply the concepts they have learned through the year. Children are motivated to utilize this platform to equip confidence and compete in a healthy environment against fellow peers of various Bhumi’s projects where they display their project models and skills in arts and literature.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, Bhumi’s Volunteers ideated to deliver the Annual Ignite Event (that happened on-ground until COVID-19 pandemic) online, where 213 children from 10 centers in Pune participated on January 23 – 24, 2021.
Conceptualised workshops and activities (Math, Computers, English, Science, Life skills, Dance, Robotics and Arts) via Breakout Rooms on Zoom made evident that consistent support and exposure, nurturance, and opportunities only steer children forward.
The workshops/activities that the children were engaged in were: (1) Computer Science – Wix Website Development, Quiz, Q&A + Memory Game, What if, to get an understanding of the functionalities of various applications (2) Life- Skills & Mentoring – Art of Living: Yoga, Meditation, Social Transformation Presentation to solve a social issue in teams (3) Arts – Blossom Tree Painting using earbuds, puppet making, portrait painting (Pencil shading, Scribble art, Thumb painting) (4) English: Story Telling, Rapid Fire, Picture Comprehension, Drama Scenes etc. (5) Robotics – Technical Quiz, Arduino (Displaying their name on a LCD screen using Arduino boards) (6) Science – Hydraulic Lift (Volunteers will perform the step by step implementation of Hydraulic Lift for children to implement), Kaleidoscope, Microscope slides, Automatic water dispenser, Recognising rarer and denser objects, Air powered Rockets (7) Math - Vedic Maths Concepts while solving simple mathematical problems, Money market, Treasure hunt, Origami, Place values etc. (8) Dance – Mimic, Adapt Tune, Solo Tune. The event was also filled with many icebreakers to keep the children active and engaged such as Emoji Antakshari (Emoji singing), Quick draw (Draw objects mentioned in 20 seconds), Mimic the Emoji etc.
The above events are testimony to Ignite Fest’s objective of bringing children of various age groups and Shelter Homes together to compete in harmony whilst showcasing their knowledge and learning from one another.
“It was exhilarating to see the children’s face lit up with excitement and to witness their participation as the volunteers put in a lot of hard work in making this year’s ignite fest as fruitful and engaging as possible, given that it happened virtually!”
- Anoushka, Volunteer, Pune
Bhumi’s vision, built on creating an equal, influential, and socially conscious society, is only getting stronger with every volunteer stepping in to teach or mentor children. We salute each one of them who made this day possible and wish that 2021-22 is even bigger and better!
