The project to bring a safe, sustainable supply of water to rural areas of Burundi is underway. The UNICEF Burundi team has targeted the provinces of Cankuzo, Rutana and Ruyigi for this project, as they are among the most vulnerable in the country, with water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and other basic socioeconomic indicators below the national averages. A study by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2004 indicated that economic benefits from WASH improvements would range from $3 to $34 per $1 invested through time saved, illness avoided, and improved school attendance. Even greater additional returns could be achieved if household water treatment accompanied drinking water and sanitation improvements.
Investing in bringing a safe, sustainable supply of water to the three targeted provinces in Burundi, therefore, could lead not only to increases in health but also to a significant reduction in poverty levels for thousands of children and their communities. And YOU are a part of this!
