Its that time of year again, when we are making preparations for the season ahead.
Since the beginning of February 2024 we have had workers present at the station making necessary repairs and maintenance , and evaulating our next steps for keeping the station in the required conditions for volunteers. Heavy rains over the past months have all but destroyed the concrete flooring of the area outside the kitchen, so this is a priority. We also needed a new stove, as some of the metal had rusted while the station was closed.
We have also invested again in reparation of the solar panels that are needed to charge radios, emergency phones and the computers. We have also built a "housing" around the panels that we hope will protect them from insects, humidity and the salt air.
Each of the volunteer cabins receive a deep clean, along with fumigation and sealing the wood, new mosquito netting at the windows, reinforced doors, and new bunk beds.
The "rancho" or communal area is being spruced up with paint, and the wooden beams are being treated against termites.
There is also the never ending purchase of the equipment needed to patrol the beach and construct the hatchery.
Shovels, wheelbarrows, latex gloves, flashlights, backpacks - just a few of the items that are constantly needed in order for us to conitunue our work.
The reward of all of this investment?
Knowing that over 60% of endangered leatherback nests can be protected and over 12000 hatchlings released back into the ocean safely!
Please continue to support our necessary work - if we cant protect the beach, then 100% of nests would be poached, predated or washed away by erosion.
