Hands-on Beekeeping Training in Action

Building Sustainable Livelihoods Through Beekeeping
For more than a decade, TIES has been promoting scientific apiculture by providing regular training, technical guidance, and continuous support to beekeepers across Kerala.
Through this initiative, TIES works with marginal farmers, agricultural labourers, women, youth, urban households, educational institutions, and corporate partners to establish healthy honey bee colonies. Beneficiaries receive live bee colonies, beekeeping equipment, and hands-on training that enables them to generate additional income while contributing to environmental conservation.
Equipping Communities with Skills for a Greener Future
During this reporting period, TIES continued to organize practical apiculture training programmes for community members and aspiring beekeepers. Participants learned scientific methods of hive management, colony maintenance, honey and beeswax harvesting, value-added product preparation, and marketing of bee products.
These training programmes not only improve technical knowledge but also empower families with sustainable livelihood opportunities that can supplement household income while encouraging environmentally responsible practices.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Conservation Leaders
Regular apiculture awareness and hands-on training sessions are conducted for school and college students, introducing them to the fascinating world of honey bees and their vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems.
Students visiting the TIES campus have the opportunity to observe live bee colonies, understand bee behaviour, explore different types of hives, and learn about pollination and biodiversity conservation through practical demonstrations. These interactive experiences help cultivate environmental stewardship and encourage young people to appreciate the importance of protecting pollinators for future generations.
Monsoon: A Challenging Season for Beekeeping
The southwest monsoon is an essential part of Kerala's ecosystem, but it also presents one of the greatest challenges for beekeepers.
During the monsoon season, prolonged rainfall significantly affects honey collection. Bees are unable to forage in heavy rain and strong winds, preventing them from collecting nectar and pollen. To keep bee colonies healthy and prevent colony losses, beekeepers must provide continuous supplementary feeding until natural forage becomes available again.
This season becomes a critical period for colony care and maintenance. TIES continues to provide technical guidance to beekeepers on protecting hives from excess moisture, maintaining colony health, monitoring pests and diseases, and ensuring that bee colonies remain strong and healthy throughout the rainy season.
Your Support Creates Lasting Impact
With your support, we can expand the reach of the Bees for Life project to more communities, empower more farmers and women with income-generating opportunities, inspire more young people to become environmental champions, and strengthen pollinator populations that are essential for food security and healthy ecosystems.
Together, we are creating resilient communities, conserving biodiversity, and ensuring that the invaluable work of honey bees continues to sustain both people and the planet.
